The Best ATV Trails in Estes Park

Bunce School Road

To access most ATV trails, you will have to drive a bit outside of Estes Park to get there. This trail is one of the most popular ATV/four-wheel drive trails for good reason. This is one of the few trails that has easy sections, intermediate sections, and then challenging sections for die-hard ATV fans. However, the real reason this trail is so popular is because there is a plane crash site that you can see from the trail. It was a T-33 military jet that crashed in 1965, killing the two Air Force pilots on board. The Air Force left the site as is, which today is mainly a bunch of twisted metal. The crash site is located at about 9,000 feet elevation, which means you have to wait until later in the summer to access the site. Another fun attraction on this trail is Pony Ponds, a favorite haunt of moose. And if you’ve never seen moose before, up close and personal, it truly is something special.

Middle Saint Vrain

Middle Saint Vrain trail is rated moderate to difficult. It is fairly long, so this ATV trail adventure will take you all day long, so be sure to pack plenty of snacks. However, just remember that as you are driving on a trail, you don’t have to hike the entire thing. You can turn around wherever and just make this a half day adventure instead. However, this trail is one of the most beautiful near Estes Park. It offers views of the continental divide, Beaver Reservoir, and many more mountain views. This trail is best from late June to early July to see the wildflowers. If you are in Estes Park, this trail should be near the top of your list. This trail is also popular with hikers, runners, and campers.

Switzerland Trail

Located near Boulder, Switzerland Trail is 20 miles long and is great for all skill levels of ATV riders. With beautiful wild flowers, this trail climbs gradually through rolling mountain meadows. There are great views of RMNP. This trail runs straight with little grade because it was originally cut for the railroad. The line was meant for miners that needed a route out of the mountains. The railroad operated from 1883 to 1919, carrying people, supplies, and ore back and forth from Boulder to other, smaller mountain towns. The railroad closed in part to harsh winter conditions and mine closures. Today, you won’t find any of the rails, but you will find a beautiful trail that is smooth with a gradual slope that is easy to travel and yet narrow enough to have you extremely close to nature.

Pole Hill

Pole Hill is a trail extremely close to Estes Park. You can expect to see spectacular views of both Estes Park and RMNP and abundant wildlife. The first part of the trail is very challenging as it’s steep, however, this loop is only about six miles long and extremely rewarding. This is one of the few trails that is open all year long for hikers, but closed to four-wheel drive vehicles in the winter. This trail is great in the warm summer months of July through September. Perfect ATV trail for those seeking something really close to Estes Park and is only a half a day’s adventure.
